Oktoberfest In Wisconsin
It’s that time of the year again: time for apple picking, pumpkin carving, and warm fall drinks. But first, Oktoberfest.
What is Oktoberfest, you may ask? Good question. Oktoberfest is a sixteen day festival typically held in Munich, Germany during the months of September and October, hence the name. This worldly celebration revolves around three main things: food, family, and fun…..oh, and beer, a lot of beer.
The first Oktoberfest dates back to fall of 1810 and was celebrated in honor of the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. Festival activities began on October 12, 1810 and ended on October 17th with a horse race. Celebration continued year after year, ultimately extending the festival, and gradually moving into September.
There are many aspects of this festival to look forward to, including a Costume and Rifleman’s parade, Landlords and Breweries parade, and, of course, the official tapping of the keg in front of the Bavaria statue.
The good news is, you don’t need to travel all of the way to Munich to enjoy these exhilarating festival traditions. Look no further than your Wisconsin backyard. As a matter of fact, more than 40% of the state’s residents stem from German roots. It is only fitting that Wisconsin is home to some of Oktoberfest’s most exciting celebrations, besides Germany (of course). Below are some of the key locations in the Badger state to let your inner Oktoberfest flag fly. Attend for live music, fun events for both kids and adults, and some excellent tasting brews.
